So there were few surprises this morning when the Academy Award Nominations were announced, especially in the actor categories. We are thrilled for Sandra Bullock and are rooting for her. While remaining one of the most successful actresses of her generation she remains, humble, sweet and down to earth. We were rooting for M’onique for supporting actress and were enchanted with her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, but her haughty entitled acceptance at the SAG awards left us cold and we wonder if that will hurt her chances at the big show.

The real surprises came in the Best Picture nominations. If you didn’t already know, the Best Picture Nominees were expanded from 5 to 10. This is obviously a bid to get more pictures nominated and in that way some of the more popular films will get a chance. So instead of art house hits, nobody has seen, the normal movie goer will have something to root for. It is ironic that in this first year of the new system, the most popular movie of all time is also the front runner-Avatar. We were pleasantly surprised to see Up, The Blind Side and District 9 in the mix for best picture. But for them we are afraid it will be an honor just to be nominated.
